Forum: GratefulDead Subject: non-dead RIP Shunka, loving dog

My dog of 10 years, Shunka, was killed this morning by three dogs who dug under our fence to attack and kill Shunka. I found Shunka by the side of the highway 10 years ago - she had a gash on her belly of unknown origin, and looked as if she really just needed someone to care for her, which I did. Shunka had a litter of 12 puppies when we were on the road and broken down in Eugene OR in 2001. I managed to give away 9 of those pups - I'm sure they are still bringing joy to the lives of their families. Shunka is survived at home by her daughter Iris, who is very confused and depressed today. Shunka lived a great, long life, and died and noble dog's death protecting her family and home. RIP, Shunka, you will be missed.

BTW, I named Shunka for the Lakota word for canine. Years later, I was traveling through Eastern South Dakota near the Whapeton/Sioux reservation near the North Dakota border. We stopped at a rest stop and an old indian came up and started petting Shunka and we talked for a bit. I told him that her name was Shunka and he almost fell over laughing. I asked him what's so funny, and he said that Shunka means shit-eater. Apparently, West of the river, Shunka is canine, and East of the river, Shunka is (horse)shit-eater. We have all had many a laugh over that in the 10 years we were together.

Just saw your post today.
So sorry to hear about your loss.
She is a beautiful girl and I am sure you miss her.
I would be lost without my three boys... Sal, Dean, and Sampson.
Keep your head up and know she was loved.
That's all we can do...

Exactly!
Not too many folks make that connection. Has to be my favorite book of all time.

Interesting side note: Dean is the skinnier dog that has WAY too much energy for his own good and often runs off through the woods after some imagined goal. Sal is all laid back and cool, but somewhat grouchy, plus he follows Dean everywhere. We didn't plan this when we named them and I often wonder if being given those names somehow dictated their eventual personalities...

Very cool.

Like a myth you rode in from the west
From the go you had my button pressed
Did the tea-time of your soul
Make you long for wilder days?
Did you never let Jack Kerouac
Wash over you in waves?

Damn Dali,
I have a hard time replying to your news. Its so sad, and
its hard to have anything to say that will comfort your
mourning.
Im sure you're almost as confused and depressed as Iris.

I would just like to offer you my sincere condolement.
There are a vast number of dog lovers out there that feel the same way.

From the bottom of my heart, I feel for you. Thank you for
the pictures and the anecdote. I truely am sorry for your loss. But I can not type anymore
for I can't see the screen through the tears in my
eyes.

Those that have been rescued from the side of the road knowingly give their lives and the greatest of joy to their saviors...and when they leave us, it's usually the greatest of grief. I'm sorry for your pain, but Grateful as I reflect on the past life of one of my own. Man's best friend.

Thanks man - unbeknownst to me and my high school pals from Roswell Ga who drove up to visit campus prior to my freshman year, the dead were on campus. The show was the day after we got in. Suffice it to say that it bode well for my coming college years.

The Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Sorry to hear about your dog. Our 11 year dog Nikki was nearly killed by an idiot tweaker neighbor's pit bull just a year ago. On our front porch with me attached to her leash. The fight of my life to get that dog off Nikki, not to mention the two tweakers pounding on me as I tried to save my dog's life. PA state police advised us to arm ourselves or move... but don't shoot the pit bull. So move we did, 300 miles to NY, in two feet of snow. Not a neighbor in sight and the shotgun is never out of reach. Nikki recovered and loves the new place.

Four years ago, Shunka fought off two pit bulls in protection of Zoey's mom, eight months pregnant at the time. Almost forgot what a great protector she was. She came out of the fight almost lost an ear, but some care (no vet) and she was good as gold.

She sounds like a great dog. They are hard to replace, but their unconditional love will remain in your heart.

Nikki bit the two tweekers with a pit bull locked on her throat, and when it was over, she looked more concerned for me than herself. I'll never forget that.

By the way Nikki's birthday - August 9, 1995. One love for another, so it goes...

All the best to your family.

Very sorry to hear about your loss. My brother lost his dog of 10 years to cancer just a couple days ago. She sounds like a truly great dog. Don't know what to say really, but many people here will be thinking of you during this difficult time.

Very sorry to hear about it, bro. I feel for you. When I was thirteen, my cat was killed by a stray dog. She could easily have gotten away, but she'd just had kittens, and died protecting them. Of course, the dog killed them, too.

There was only one stray dog around, a German shepherd mix that had been fucking with everything. My friend and I got his .22 pistol, fired up his dirt bike, and went to hunt the dog down.

We finally found him in a cul-de-sac. I expected him to run, but he didn't, not even when we rode up and stopped not ten feet away from him. I slowly leveled the pistol, aiming right between his grayish eyes. There was no fear in those eyes, or desperation, no meanness; nor were they impassive, the cold, predatory stare of a killing creature. What those eyes expressed, very clearly, was a pleading amiability, a blend of curiosity, hope, and hunger.

He looked as though he thought the gun an offering, of food, perhaps of friendship. I tucked it back into my pocket, told my friend let's go.

Daliguana: I really just wanted to say sorry about your dog, not jump in with my fucking story. I'm sleepy, running autopilot, though, and that's what happens. It's not meant as a parable or anything like that. There's no morale. I didn't even learn much from the damn thing. If what happened to ole Shunka happened to one of my dogs, honestly, I'd be out for fucking blood. At least at first. If you're not, it's commendable; if you are, it's understandable.

namaste,

- blacklakelight

not to be a dick, but if the neighbor's dogs are prone to that type of action, I'd be real worried about the little one in the pics and would take any and all steps to make sure that shit doesn't happen again...
